Community Buildings

Our vision is that all community buildings in the three project communities will have an energy ‘make over’ by the end of 2007. This will include improved energy efficiency and possibly appropriately installed renewables. Switching to a 'green' electricity tariff and ‘offsetting' their reduced carbon footprint by the end of calendar year 2007 are also targets.
Community buildings include schools, public halls, churches, and tourist facilities. Energy efficiency will be improved through fitting low energy light bulbs, hot water tank jackets, draught proofing, loft and cavity wall insulation.

Switching to a 'green' electricity tariff ensures that the electricity used has been matched by cleanly generated electricity from sources such as hydro, wind and landfill gas. 'Carbon' offsetting is a practical means whereby the remaining energy use creating carbon dioxide emissions (a greenhouse gas) is 'cancelled out' by reducing energy consumption elsewhere.
MEA intends to raise public awareness of practical actions to tackle climate change at the community buildings through promoting what has been done, and the consequent financial and carbon dioxide emission savings.
